Ask what the label refers to

If a profile mentions a course, certification or membership, ask for the full name of the organization and the qualification being described. Training completion, an active credential and association membership can be different things. Use the issuing organization's own information to understand a specific claim rather than assuming every abbreviation has the same meaning.

Ask how the provider keeps their knowledge current and which parts of the training relate to the service you want. An answer about birth support may not explain the person's approach to postpartum household visits. Request an explanation in ordinary language if the discussion becomes a list of titles without a description of the work.

Keep scope separate from training

Alberta Health Services distinguishes the non-clinical doula role from regulated maternity care. A doula course does not make the provider your physician, nurse or registered midwife. If someone also holds another professional qualification, ask which role they would be working in under the proposed agreement and how that is documented.

This matters when a conversation moves from support into a question about your health. You need to know who is responsible for assessment and advice, rather than assuming a collection of credentials makes every task part of the service. Discuss clinical questions through the appropriate care arrangement.

Look for an explanation you can use

Ask how the provider handles a task they do not offer, a question outside their role or a situation requiring another professional. A clear boundary can be more informative than a promise to cover every possible need. Follow up on anything that conflicts with the written agreement.

Finally, bring the conversation back to your own priorities: communication, availability, boundaries, backup and the work included. Verification of a training claim is one part of checking information. It does not remove the need to decide whether the actual support arrangement is one you want in your home and around your care.
