Alberta's Find Healthcare pages offer routes to facilities and programs or services. The facility search includes location-based options. A directory is useful when you have a service name, a community or a type of facility in mind; it is less useful when a search phrase is expected to decide what care you need.
If you do not know the kind of help required, ask a healthcare professional or an appropriate health advice service. Once you have a name to work with, use the directory to investigate the practical details. Keep the distinction between locating a service and receiving advice about your own situation.
Work from a specific term
A very broad word such as “baby” may produce entries with different purposes. Try the service wording on your referral or discharge information. Check spelling and expand an abbreviation before assuming that a missing result means the service does not exist.
Read the organization and location shown in the result. Similar program names can occur in several communities, and one service description may list multiple delivery locations. Confirm the location relevant to you rather than copying the first address on the page.
The description is only part of the listing
Look for information about eligibility, access, referrals and contact. A program that sounds relevant may have a particular age group, geographic area or route into care. Where a detail is missing, turn it into a question for the provider rather than supplying the answer yourself.
For example, a family could find a service that mentions postpartum support but still need to ask whether it takes self-referrals and serves their community. The useful outcome of the search is then a focused call, not an assumed appointment. Save the exact listing so you and the provider are discussing the same service.
Telephone numbers may serve different functions. An information contact, booking line and general facility number should not be treated as interchangeable. Write the purpose beside the number, especially if another person will help make the call.
If a link stops working, return to the official directory's main page and search again. Service names and organizational pages can change. Avoid relying indefinitely on a copied directory record without its original context, and confirm time-sensitive details with the service before travelling.
